It’s a new year and a new decade. Time to make your new New Year’s resolutions, right? According to U.S. News and World Report, 80% of all New Year’s resolutions fail within the first quarter of the year.

But why do they fail? Are our goals too big? Too vague? Or are we just really not ready put in that much effort to achieve them? Do you start out strong and then have a small hiccup?

Whether you call it a resolution, a goal, or a habit, the reason most people fail is probably some combination of the above. We’re excited for the new beginning and in our heads we see ourselves becoming this whole new person who gets up early, exercises daily, eats well, and reads a new book every week. The reality is that we can most likely only stick with one new resolution or goal.

This week, let’s talk about the first step in setting yourself up for succeeding this year with your resolution. Create a clear, specific and realistic goal. Do you want to get healthy or lose weight? Instead of making a resolution to lose 50 pounds, your goal could be that you are going to run/walk a 5k by June, or that you are going to start doing meal prep every Sunday afternoon. If that seems too daunting, you could begin by eating an additional fruit or vegetable every day.

It’s a new decade! Let’s start it off with a new clear, specific and time sensitive goal. Stay tuned for the next article where we will discuss how to stick with your new soon to be habit.
