Each month here on “Your Health”, we look forward to bringing you a wealth of information on all things health and wellness and this month we’re exploring the important role nutrition plays in our health for National Nutrition Month. From food trends and nutritional tips, to making informed food choices and developing sound eating habits, we’re excited to share!
As you can see, this episode is chock-full of great nutrition tips! Many of them go right along with
Nutrition Month’s 2020 theme: Eat Right, Bite by Bite. And while on the topic, here are a few more tips we thought you might appreciate!
- Don’t fear coffee – Did you know coffee is healthy? It’s high in antioxidants, and studies have linked coffee intake to longevity and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and numerous other illnesses. So, go ahead and enjoy that cup of joe!
- Take care of your gut health – The bacteria in your gut, collectively called the gut microbiota, are very important for overall health. In fact, a disruption in gut bacteria is linked to some of the world’s most serious chronic diseases, including obesity. Ways to improve gut health? Eat probiotic foods like yogurt and sauerkraut and eat plenty of fiber, which functions as fuel for your gut bacteria.
- Use extra virgin olive oil – it’s one of the healthiest vegetable oils and loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and powerful antioxidants that can fight inflammation.
“Gut Health” Matters
Did you know 70 to 80 percent of your immune tissue is housed in your digestive tract? I found that fact to be remarkable! When the integrity of the gut is compromised, it can lead to a “leaky gut”, which means that the body is no longer protected against “invaders” like undigested food, gluten and bacteria which have passed through the “holes” in the gut lining.
Naturopathic Dr. Emily Poccia of Wildcraft Medicine explains why prebiotics and probiotics are important and how your gut is the cornerstone of your immune system.
Remember, good nutrition doesn’t have to be overwhelming. This month (and beyond) continue to strive towards small goals and changes, because every little bit (or bite) counts! And, make it a family affair! The National Nutrition Month site gives plenty of ideas and great tips for healthy and productive ways to fill the time at home with your kiddos.
