How celebrity trainer Jono Castano helped Lincoln Lewis improve his fitness – Daily Telegraph

You might have spotted former Home and Away star Lincoln Lewis on the cover of a fitness magazine recently — all rippling biceps and washboard abs — but the truth is a photo like that only shows the destination, not the long and sometimes gruelling fitness journey it took to get there.

Because there was a “before” photo, too, taken 12 weeks earlier. And by the actor’s own admission, it wasn’t nearly as impressive.

The TV star, and son of rugby league immortal Wally Lewis, was 12kg heavier and a whole lot unhappier. The 31-year-old was in a dark place that was getting darker. Until he met celebrity trainer Jono Castano.

“I probably got Lincoln at his worst, to tell you the truth,” Jono says.

“He wasn’t a happy chap, he was a little bit overweight and he was ready for a full life change.

“We did 12 weeks together and now he’s a whole new man. You can feel his energy and to be able to have helped someone change like that, it’s priceless.

“It’s just the best feeling. Getting someone through the full journey, with all its ups and downs, I just love it. It’s why I do what I do.

“I used to play professional football and I fell in love with the team environment, with the challenge with winning. And I knew I couldn’t do anything else. I couldn’t go and be an accountant or something. That’s just not me.”

Castano is the kind of bloke that brims with this boundless energy, almost bouncing on the spot when you talk to him. But above all else, he’s endlessly positive, about himself and everyone else.

It’s a sense of positivity that’s often missing from fitness snaps on social media.

But that’s something Castano is trying to change with his one community movement, which has now amassed half a million followers, and spreads support and encouragement online rather than making anyone feel inadequate.

“When we talk about physical and mental health, to me the physical is number two on that list,” Castano says.

“Your mental state is by far the most important thing, no matter what you want to do in life.

“Fitness plays a big part in that. In my opinion, healthy is happy.”

FAST FACTS OF … A SUCCESSFUL TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Be accountable

“Accountability is what we struggle with the most in the fitness industry,” Castano says.

“It’s making people accountable for their actions. If you’re not, you’re never going to get through a program.”

2. Mind matters

“Mindset is the most important thing,” Castano says.

“You need to have your mindset right, and you need to understand your ‘whys’. Why are you doing the bad things, why do you want to do the good things? Once you know that, you’re on your way.”

3. Avoid portion distortion

“The thing where most people go wrong is overeating,” Castano says.

“More often than not, we confuse hunger with being dehydrated. So keeping hydrated will help you avoid portion distortion.”

ASK ADAM …

Question: Hi Adam, I struggle with knee pain. Have you got any tips to help with the pain?

Answer: Like most former NRL players, I know a thing or two about knee pain. The very best thing you can do for them is to ease the burden.

For every kilogram of body weight you lose, you take four kilograms of load off each of your knees. If you lose 10kg, that’s 40kg of load per knee you’re taking away per step.
