Started by the National Recreation and Parks Administration, Family Health & Fitness Day is celebrated the second Saturday in June each year. The events are meant to promote the importance of parks and recreation in keeping communities healthy.
Beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and continuing until noon, a variety of events are taking place at Borden Park, 901 Lamont St., including corn hole, giant Jenga, other small games along with the following activities:
– Tennis lessons: Join the parks and recreation staff at 10 a.m. at the tennis courts for a demonstration. You’ll also be able to register for summer lessons on site as well.
– Pickleball: Ever heard of Pickleball? Now you can try it out. Nets and equipment will be available free of charge at the basketball court from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
– Disc golf: Come by the Borden Community building between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. to give disc golf a try. Borden Park has an 18-hole disc golf course, that received new baskets back in 2017.
PHOTO CONTEST
In addition to the free games and activities taking place at Borden Park this Saturday, the parks and recreation department is also having a photo contest as part of Family Health and Fitness Day. If you share a photo of you and your family being active at the park, you’ll have a chance to win.
Here’s how the contest works:
– Post a photo to the city’s parks and recreation Facebook page using the hashtag “nrpafamilyfitday.
– The photo must be taken at Borden Park and show some type of activity (walking or running, playing tennis or basketball).
– Multiple photos are encouraged.
– The more creative you get, the better the chance you have at winning.
– Winners will receive a prize pack which includes a free rental from parks and recreation, T-shirts, water bottles and more.
ABOUT THE PARK
Borden Park is one of the original parks from the Nolen plan (that was used to design Kingsport) and was built as the ideal buffer between the industrial zone and residential area of town.
It’s located between Lamont, Willow and Borden streets and includes a basketball court, six tennis courts, picnic shelters, two playgrounds, horseshoe pits, a paved walking trail, 65 different species of trees and an 18-hole disc golf course.
